Persistent reliability troubles with the 12V-2x6 GPU power connector — a component that has generated no shortage of failure reports on both AMD Radeon and NVIDIA graphics cards — continue to push peripheral makers into the protection business. ASUS has responded with its ROG Equalizer, Cooler Master with its GPU Shield technology, and ASRock with a protected, right-angled 12V-2x6 cable. Lian Li is the latest entrant, and its approach differs from the pack.
The company's new Edge Hub Adv is the latest iteration of its USB-controlled fan hub line, but this version adds two sensor ports dedicated to temperature monitoring via NTC (negative temperature coefficient) sensors. The bundle includes a 650 mm 12V-2x6 GPU power cable with those sensors built in. The power cable runs between the graphics card and the power supply, while the NTC cable plugs directly into the Edge Hub Adv, which in turn feeds data to Lian Li's L-Connect 3 monitoring software on Windows.
Out of the box, L-Connect 3 is configured to watch the NTC sensor's readings and initiate an emergency shutdown once the connector temperature hits a set threshold. Before the system powers down, an on-screen pop-up warns the user that a shutdown is imminent and offers the option of triggering it manually instead.
Lian Li has also layered in remote notification: if a misbehaving GPU power connector trips the shutdown, the company will send the user an email as well. The feature set positions the Edge Hub Adv within a growing wave of third-party safeguards aimed at defusing one of the most contentious connector designs in contemporary PC hardware.
