Microsoft folds Autopilot, Code, Home and Office into a single Copilot app, while its CEO frames the assistant as a proactive layer across every work task.
Microsoft chief executive Satya Nadella has delivered his clearest articulation yet of the company's ambitions for its AI assistant, describing Copilot as a "new OS for work that spans every model, every form factor, and every task." The statement accompanied the most extensive redesign of Copilot Microsoft has undertaken, an effort that consolidates four separate components into a single application and signals a shift in how the company expects users to interact with workplace AI.
The overhaul folds four products into one app. Autopilot, a long-running enterprise agent, is absorbed alongside Code, an in-app builder that hosts applications within a company's own tenant. A component called Home merges the Chat and Cowork experiences, while Office is now embedded directly, meaning Word, Excel, and PowerPoint run inside Copilot rather than as standalone entry points. The result is an assistant positioned as the container for Microsoft's productivity stack.
Nadella also pointed to Copilot support inside Teams and introduced a new feature named Today, which surfaces relevant information drawn from across Microsoft 365 without prompting from the user. The direction suggests Microsoft envisions Copilot as a proactive layer spanning a person's entire workday, rather than a chat window opened deliberately—or stumbled into—when needed.
Notably, Microsoft declined this time to describe Copilot as part of the Windows 11 operating system, a marked contrast from one year ago, when its "agentic OS" framing for Windows met a rough reception among users. The company has explored similar territory before: internal work on a full Copilot-centered operating system went by the codename Project Aion, an effort reportedly dating back to 2024, though Microsoft has not indicated whether that project remains active.
