Blizzard confirmed a new StarCraft game at BlizzCon 2026, abandoning real-time strategy for an open-world, story-driven shooter set roughly 70 years after Legacy of the Void, targeting 2030.
Blizzard used the BlizzCon 2026 Opening Ceremony to confirm a brand-new StarCraft title, closing out a hiatus that dates back to the final StarCraft II expansion in 2015. The project carries the plain name StarCraft rather than StarCraft III, and it severs the franchise from the real-time strategy formula that defined it, repositioning the property as an open-world, story-driven shooter.
The new game is set in the Koprulu Sector about 70 years after the events of Legacy of the Void, and Blizzard frames the narrative as a fresh story rather than a direct continuation. Creative direction sits with Dan Hay, who previously served as creative director on several Far Cry titles at Ubisoft. During the reveal, Hay told the audience the game would be fought "not from above, but down in the mud, in the fire" — a framing that signals clear changes to StarCraft's gameplay mechanics.
The announcement leaned entirely on cinematics. The trailer depicted Dominion soldiers moving through training and into combat against the Zerg, but Blizzard showed no gameplay footage whatsoever. With a 2030 release window and the studio openly acknowledging that the game remains early in development, Blizzard has plenty of runway to debut actual gameplay before launch. For now, specifics on combat systems, world structure and target platforms remain unknown.
The franchise has been largely quiet since Nova Covert Ops shipped in 2016, which makes Blizzard's choice to reinvent StarCraft as a shooter rather than return to its RTS format a genuine surprise — and, in all likelihood, exactly the reason the property is attracting attention again.
