Recent Linux driver changes enabling GDDR7 memory and other graphics IP blocks suggest AMD may have started enablement work on its next-generation RDNA 5 Radeon GPUs.
AMD has started laying the software groundwork for GDDR7 memory, with recent changes to the company's Linux GPU drivers adding support for the advanced memory standard along with enablement for other graphics IP blocks. The patches, reported by Tom's Hardware, could indicate that enablement work on AMD's RDNA 5 GPUs is under way.
In the open-source Linux graphics stack, support for a new memory type rarely appears in isolation. Bringing up GDDR7 means the driver must recognize and manage the memory as part of the wider graphics pipeline, work that is typically staged across a series of patches covering both the memory subsystem itself and the IP blocks that surround it. It is the combination in AMD's recent changes — GDDR7 enablement alongside other graphics IP blocks — that has drawn attention, since taken together they suggest a broader slice of next-generation hardware is being brought up in software rather than a standalone memory tweak.
For AMD's Radeon line, adopting GDDR7 would mark a shift to the newest generation of GDDR memory — the advanced memory standard the driver changes could herald for next-generation Radeon GPUs. Memory bandwidth is a defining constraint for GPU workloads, and the memory generation a driver targets is one of the clearest fingerprints of the hardware class it is being written for.
As with any driver commit, caution is warranted. Code enablement on its own does not confirm product specifications, launch timing, or even that GDDR7 will appear in a final RDNA 5 design; it establishes only that AMD's software teams are preparing for the memory type and related IP. Even so, the changes give observers a concrete early marker of RDNA 5 progress in AMD's Linux driver tree. Further GDDR7-related patches — and additional IP block enablement — would strengthen the case that AMD's next Radeon generation is taking shape in software ahead of any hardware reveal.
