Perplexity and Nvidia have released Portable Computer, a Windows version of Perplexity's local-first AI agent, with availability beginning Sept. 14. The software is restricted to machines running GeForce RTX or RTX PRO graphics cards equipped with at least 24GB of VRAM, a specification floor that immediately narrows the pool of PCs able to run it. The release also ties Perplexity's agent software directly to Nvidia's desktop GPU ecosystem.
The 24GB memory threshold is the story's central constraint for hardware watchers. Most consumer GeForce cards ship with far less VRAM, so the requirement effectively limits Portable Computer to high-end configurations — the GeForce flagship tier and the RTX PRO line aimed at professional workstations. For buyers, the message is that locally hosted agent software is arriving first, and perhaps only, on memory-rich silicon. For PC builders and buyers, the cutoff effectively defines which systems can participate in this first wave of local agent software.
Portable Computer is designed for multistep tasks, placing it in the agent category rather than single-prompt chatbot territory.
