The Information reports Apple is developing an AI-focused server built on M8 Ultra chips linked by NVIDIA NVLink Fusion, targeting enterprises and governments with a launch planned for 2029.
Apple is reportedly weighing a return to the server hardware business it exited when Xserve was retired. Citing The Information, the report says the company is developing AI-focused M-series chips that could incorporate several NVIDIA components, including the NVLink Fusion portfolio of technologies and IP. One contemplated configuration would interconnect two or four Apple M8 Ultra chips using NVIDIA NVLink for socket-to-socket communication, while NVIDIA NVLink-C2C handles die-to-die interconnection. Launch is currently planned for 2029.
Should it materialize, the machine would mark Apple's first entry into the server space since the debut of Xserve in 2002 and its discontinuation in 2011, a hiatus of nearly two decades. The contemplated comeback builds on the traction that Mac mini and Mac Studio are currently experiencing among AI developers. That gap underscores how dramatically the server landscape — and Apple's positioning within it — has shifted.
The commercial backdrop is unusually strong. Apple's Mac lineup achieved a record $10.4 billion in sales last quarter, with demand from the AI community cited as a key driver. Enterprises are already going a step further, constructing custom racks that mount multiple Mac Studios to stand up local AI inferencing efforts — a do-it-yourself cluster approach the rumored server product would formalize.
Under the reported division of labor, Apple would delegate every interconnect question to NVIDIA NVLink Fusion while concentrating, as before, on the actual system-on-chip itself. The new rack design would target enterprises and governments — buyers who may already be running Mac clusters locally and who represent the natural first market for a purpose-built Apple server.
