Qualcomm says its upcoming flagship chip will run larger AI models with ease, keeping agentic workloads on the device instead of the cloud.
Qualcomm is framing its next flagship mobile platform around a single promise: AI agents that never leave the device. According to the company, the upcoming Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 will run bigger models with ease — a claim aimed squarely at the growing class of agentic AI features that flagship smartphones are increasingly expected to handle locally rather than in the cloud.
The positioning, reported by Android Authority, places the chip's neural processing unit at the center of the story. Instead of routing requests to remote servers, Qualcomm's pitch is that the NPU inside the 8 Elite Gen 6 will carry agentic workloads on its own — AI software that plans and acts on a user's behalf without depending on a persistent connection.
"Bigger models with ease" is the operative phrase. On-device inference has long been constrained by memory and thermal budgets, which is why many assistant features run compact models on the phone while heavier tasks move to the data center. If Qualcomm's statement holds, the Gen 6 generation is designed to push that boundary outward, allowing larger models to execute directly on the device — the prerequisite for agents that respond instantly, work offline, and keep user data local.
No detailed specifications accompany the claim in the current reporting, so the benchmark is deliberately simple: model capacity on-device. Qualcomm is staking its next flagship cycle on agentic AI as the workload that matters, and the 8 Elite Gen 6 will be measured against exactly that promise — how big a model it can run, and how easily — once the chip reaches the market.
