The company presents the transition as continuity, yet the timing lands at a delicate moment: AI tools are reshaping how creative software is priced and distributed, and the incoming chief must prove that AI adoption converts into paid demand rather than unpaid usage.
Investors are withholding any benefit of the doubt. Reuters reported a 1.7% after-hours decline in Adobe shares following the announcement, and the stock is already down roughly 18% in 2026 after sliding 21% in 2025. The selloff does not reveal why each investor sold, but it establishes the hurdle: continuity alone will not lift the stock unless the incoming team demonstrates that AI can expand the paid base without eroding price or retention.
The fundamentals entering the handoff remain solid on the surface. Q2 revenue reached $6.62 billion, a 13% year-over-year increase, while total annualized recurring revenue climbed to $27.10 billion. Adobe also disclosed that AI-first ARR surpassed $500 million and tripled year over year. That distinction carries weight, because AI usage can expand well before paid seats, pricing or retention reflect it — meaning headline growth may mask weaker monetization quality.
The immediate risk, then, is not a disclosed collapse but a deterioration in the quality of Adobe's recurring revenue, which continues to grow on a consistent reported basis. The stock's defining question under Chakravarthy is whether AI adoption can be converted into durable ARR without trading away the pricing power and retention economics of the installed base.
